Art as a Weapon

Art as a Weapon

Artists and creatives have played a key role in the fight  for freedom, and are garnering solidarity for Myanmar internationally.

Chuu has spent the last decade creating art that depicts Myanmar women's lives. Nowadays she creates art for the resistance.  One day, she took a blank canvas and asked a crowd of protesters to express their feelings. Hundreds of people wrote their thoughts, painted their hopes and fears. Voices came together on one canvas.

Artists and creatives are among the most targeted. As of May 2021, four poets had been murdered: two of them were shot dead, one burned alive; while another was abducted, tortured and returned to his family with all organs removed. Many of Chuu's friends have also been detained and remain behind bars but they are still fighting with their art.
