Living Under
the Coup

People’s lives have been turned upside down. Myanmar women in particular face increasing vulnerability to violence at the hands of the junta.

24-year old Ingyin Hmway would always remember February 1st as the day her dream turned to dust. A University of Medicine student in Mandalay, Ingyin is now part of a women's alliance that is fighting for democracy and human rights.

She recounts those harrowing days when they were demanding the release of students who were brutally arrested. “The army ran protesters over with cars and shot at us with real bullets. They beat and dragged people away.”  This did nothing but stoke their courage and creativity. On March 8th, Myanmar’s women warriors hung their htamein (sarongs) in defiance and in solidarity with thousands of women suffering abuse at the hands of the junta.
